Brown & Blue Quilt Diaper BagBaby is on its way, and it’s time to think about making that essential baby gear purchase: the diaper bag.

Diaper bags come in a wide range of shapes, sizes, colors, fabrics, styles, designs, and prices, but most moms want to find something that a) works (i.e., is functional); and b) looks good (i.e., is fashionable).

While most diaper bags are designed to be functional, a great many of them are, unfortunately, quite unfashionable and look like cutesy, cheesy bags a three-year-old would carry around. Further, many of those bags that do make a positive fashion statement aren’t as functional as new moms would like them to be.

It can be tricky to find a diaper bag that is both functional and fashionable – as well as one that doesn’t break the bank – but these bags are out there. And the good news is, the availability of both functional and fashionable diaper bags is increasing, because the market is paying attention to the fact that moms want to carry around a bag that is not only practical but also looks good, too. After all, the diaper bag is carried (or lugged) around on an almost daily basis.

There are a few things to keep in mind while searching for a diaper bag. You’ll want to think about whether you want a small, medium-sized, or large bag or a handbag, shoulder tote, or backpack style, for example. However, no matter what type of bag you’re after, you should look for a bag that:

  • is strong and durable, yet lightweight
  • is easy to clean and maintain
  • is water resistant or waterproof
  • contains plenty of pockets and compartments for all of your baby’s stuff (diapers, wipes, cream, change pad, bottles, pacifiers, toys, change of clothes, snacks, etc.) – as well as your own stuff (wallet, keys, cell phone, chapstick, water bottle, etc.)
  • opens and closes easily yet securely
  • includes some accessories/extra features you will need
  • is comfortable to carry and transport
  • matches your personality
  • complements your wardrobe
  • your husband won’t mind carrying around
  • you will be happy and proud to carry around!

If you’ve got the money, why not spoil yourself with a fashionable designer diaper bag? These bags are specifically designed to be both practical and super stylish for the new mom. You can find a whole host of different colors, styles, designs, and fabrics – bright and bold, soft and subtle, leather, animal print, smaller handbag-type, larger totes, etc. The majority of these designer bags are so trendy and chic, you can carry one around without anyone even knowing it’s a diaper bag (although the baby in your arms, carrier, or stroller might be a giveaway).

Of course, if spending upwards of $100 on a diaper bag is not in your budget, you can still find both functional and attractive bags for considerably less than that.

So how do you find a solid diaper bag that is functional, fashionable, and maybe even reasonably priced? Shop, shop, shop, and shop some more. And please shop before your baby comes – you certainly won’t have that much time after the fact. Department stores will carry diaper bags in the baby section, and you’ll likely find cheaper options there, but you may not find much for selection, high quality, or fashion. Stores that specialize in baby gear are great places to try, as is the Internet, where you’ll find a huge selection of diaper bags in a variety of styles and price ranges.

If, after shopping around for quite some time, you haven.t found your dream diaper bag, it perfectly fine to look outside the box: you might find that you don’t actually need a “diaper bag” for a diaper bag. In fact, many “regular” bags will do exactly what a diaper bag does, are functional, and maybe even cost less. As long as the bag is big enough (but not too bulky), is durable, and has plenty of pockets and compartments, it should do the trick.

Do you agree or disagree?  Perhaps, I missed something?  Either way, I would just love to hear what your thoughts are on this topic… just let me know your alive!
